(i) Co-optees cannot fill more than a third of the total membership of the community council (see Scheme for details about maximum membership).
(ii) Candidates for co-option must be at least 16 years of age, reside in the local area and be named on the electoral register for the community council area in which they are standing. Community Councils can apply
for a free copy of the register (and updates) to be sent to them for the purposes of checking eligibility.
(iii) A Candidate’s proposer should complete the detail in the form, send the form to all community councillors at least 14 days in advance of the meeting where proposal(s) to co-opt will be made. Only when approved should at a meeting should this form be sent to the CCLO (details above) to update membership records.
(iv) At the meeting all proposals for co-option will be considered, a seconder for each proposal must be sought and thereafter each person proposed must receive a 2/3 majority vote from the community councillors attending the meeting to enable them to be co-opted. In the event that there are more candidates than spaces available, and there is an equality of votes for one or more candidate, the Scheme for the Establishment of Community Councils allows for a casting vote to be made by the person presiding over the meeting.
